Empa - the place where innovation starts

Empa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the well-being of society.
The Laboratory for Mechanical Systems Engineering (MSE) at Empa in Dübendorf focuses on engineering topics related to metals, polymers and fiber reinforced polymers. Our research group „composites“ is looking for a full-time
Mechanical engineer on fiber reinforced polymer composites

Your Tasks:

Collaboration and work package lead in an 3-year industrial R&D project in the field of polymer composites cables for civil engineering applications. The position focusses on the numerical simulation and experiments related to the development of a novel CFRP anchorage device for parallel wire cables (CFRP wires) focusing on long-term behavior, damage mechanisms and fatigue behavior. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to lead and acquire engineering and experimental service projects for industrial customers in the areas of mechanical characterization of polymers and FRP composites. Scientific publishing is expected after completion of the R&D project.

Your Profile:

  • MSc in mechanical engineering (ETH or TU) focusing on fiber reinforced polymer composites
  • Necessary: experience in design, dimensioning and numerical simulation (e.g. finite elements method) of composites
  • Interest in experimental research on the long-term behavior, damage mechanisms of composites and polymers and in the development of new and sustainable products/materials - Experience in FRP composite processing
  • Good knowledge of English (oral and written) is mandatory. Knowledge of German would be an advantage.

We offer an international, highly stimulating research environment with excellent infrastructure and broad interdisciplinary surroundings with plenty of possibilities for personal and professional development. The contract will be limited initially to three years.
