Postdoctoral Position in Atomic-Scale Light-Matter Interaction of 2D Materials
Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa's around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.
The
nanotech@surfaces Laboratory is a dynamic team of quantum nanoscientists exploring the frontier of low-dimensional material systems using cutting-edge scanning probe microscopy.
Your tasks
Join an international collaboration where you will investigate atomic quantum light sources based on donor-vacancy complexes in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) on plasmonically-enhanced 2D metal substrates. You will use advanced scanning probe microscopy to investigate the light-matter interaction at the atomic scale, study photon correlation from electrically-stimulated luminescence (STML) of atomic quantum emitters, and explore exciton dynamics and energy transfer mechanisms using ultrafast lightwave-driven tunneling (THz-STM).
Your profile
We seek a highly motivated experimentalist with a PhD in physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or a related field. Candidates should have a strong background in solid-state physics, optics, or quantum nanoscience. Prior experience with scanning probe microscopy, ultra-high vacuum, THz optics, 2D materials, or programming in Python/LabVIEW are advantageous. We are looking for a team player eager to engage with cutting-edge research in a collaborative, international setting. Excellent communication skills in English are required.
Our offer
We offer the opportunity to join a world-class research team, conducting pioneering studies on atomic-scale quantum systems using advanced microscopy techniques with atomic spatial and sub-picosecond time resolution. You will collaborate with top researchers globally, shaping a competitive research portfolio in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment. Located in the Zurich area, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technologies (Empa) offer outstanding infrastructure, a broad interdisciplinary environment and competitive salaries.
The position is available starting November 2024 or upon agreement, with a planned duration of at least two years.
We live a culture of inclusion and respect. We welcome all people who are interested in innovative, sustainable and meaningful activities - that's what counts.
